Raised by Wolves by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Raised by Wolves by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Format: Hardcover
Pages: 418 pages
Publisher: EgmontUSA
Publication Date: June 8th 2010
Series: Raised by Wolves #1
ISBN: 1606840592

Summary From Goodreads:
Adopted by the Alpha of a werewolf pack after a rogue wolf brutally killed her parents right before her eyes, fifteen-year-old Bryn knows only pack life, and the rigid social hierarchy that controls it. That doesn't mean that she's averse to breaking a rule or two. But when her curiosity gets the better of her and she discovers Chase, a new teen locked in a cage in her guardian's basement, and witnesses him turn into a wolf before her eyes, the horrific memories of her parents' murders return. Bryn becomes obsessed with getting her questions answered, and Chase is the only one who can provide the information she needs. But in her drive to find the truth, will Bryn push too far beyond the constraints of the pack, forcing her to leave behind her friends, her family, and the identity that she's shaped?

RAISED BY WOLVES by Jennifer Lynn Barnes was the beginning of a whole new world for me. I have never read about a type of werewolves like this group. This is the first time that I have heard of mates being established and the wolves being so possessive. I found that I liked this book and the author set herself in a group apart by introducing me to this unique species of werewolves. As I have said many time before, voice is very important to me, to catch my attention, and Bryn's voice automatically captured me. I knew that I was going to like her from the start with her independence and likable snarkiness. This book also has a lot of supporting characters that are so important because they are apart of a pack. After I figured out this, I assumed that I would become frustrated trying to keep up, but I didn't. I don't think that there is a way to actually explain parts of the book without giving it all away. I found that the book, in and of itself, was reckless. Bryn is reckless, but the decisions that she makes are totally unpredictable. Literally, anything you think will happen, doesn't and it confounds you and amazes you. I think Jennifer and RAISED BY WOLVES gave way to a fantastic series and I can't wait until the sequel to see what is in store for Bryn and her new pack.

Waiting On Wednesday: Tris & Izzie

Tris & Izzie by Mette Ivie Harrison

A modern retelling of the German legend "Tristan and Isolde", "Tris and Izzie", is about a young witch named Izzie who is dating Mark King, the captain of the basketball team and thinks her life is going swimmingly well. Until-- she makes a love potion for her best friend Brangane and then ends up taking it herself accidentally, and falling in love with Tristan, the new guy at school. (Goodreads)

Why I'm Waiting: I love retellings and Mette Ivie Harrison. The Princess and the Hound is one of my favorites. I also have been meaning to read more classics and what better time to start than now.

Sylvie Davis is a ballerina who can't dance, she lost everything important to her in one missed step.
Uprooting her from her Manhattan apartment, and shipping her to Alabama is her mother's solution for Sylvie's unhappiness. But life might not be any more simple down south. As it turns out, her family has a lot more history than Sylvie ever knew. More unnerving, though, are the two guys that she can't stop thinking about.

Then Sylvie starts seeing things. A girl down by the lake. A man peering into the window. And a graveyard with an oddly placed headstone. Sylvie's lost nearly everything—is she starting to lose her mind as well?

"Okay, maybe not. But as Shawn held Gigi like a football in one arm, an older woman wearing a smart pantsuit cooed and scratched the dog's ears. She had to be about my mother's age. Which didn't mean there wasn't some cougar-type flirtation going on. "

Go Figure by Jo Edwards

Go Figure by Jo Edwards

Format: Paperback
Pages: 271
Publisher: Simon Pulse

Summary from Goodreads:
Ryan is not obsessing....
But she does want to lose weight. Ever since she was outted as a
"fat girl" at chearleading camp in fifth grade, Ryan's been on a mission
to shed more than a few pounds. Lately she's also on the hunt for a new relationship. Now that her ex-boyfriend is a rock star - currently posing on the cover of Rolling Stone - Ryan seriously needs to move on. They haven't spoken in months, but in the magazine Noah's wearing the bracelet Ryan gave him. She can't help wondering what that means...Not that she wants him back or anything. No, Ryan's plan is to make the most of senior year. After all, she's popular, funny, a talented photographer...she's got a lot going for her. So it's not all about losing weight or gaining a boyfriend. It's about getting what she wants. And it's about time.

Plot: Ryan Burke is a girl with a little extra weight and a lot of extra problems. After being declared fat at cheerleading camp, Ryan's life and emotions go downhill. She let's her weight rule her relationships, her friendships and her overall life. With the help of her therapist and a boy next door friend, she finds a way to kick her depression, keep her friends, and be involved in the best relationship of her teenage life.

My Opinion: This girl was a big girl power inspiration. Ryan is so very recognizable in myself and others. At times I found myself getting annoyed with Ryan at the objective comments she had about herself until I though about myself. She has all the thoughts that an overweight person and depressed person has. The thoughts that everyone is having more fun than you. She has one thing that she really loves to do: photography. She meets or remeets Josh at a photography class and they reconnect and she feels more at home with him than any of the 3 boys she has been with. In the end, it really warms me that she gets her man and happiness and she doesn't lose an ounce.

Theia Alderson has always led a sheltered life in the small California town of Serendipity Falls. But when a devastatingly handsome boy appears in the halls of her school, Theia knows she's seen Haden before- not around town, but in her dreams.

As the Haden of both the night and the day beckons her closer one moment and pushes her away the next, the only thing Theia knows for sure is that the incredible pull she feels towards him is stronger than her fear.

And when she discovers what Haden truly is, Theia's not sure if she wants to resist him, even if the cost is her soul.

"Oh, she makes a joke." He laughed. "I hardly stalked you. I may have peeked in on you from time to time." He sounded indignant. "I tried not to intrude on any private moments anyway."

The Hollow by Jessica Verday

Series: The Hollow, #1

Format: Paperback

Pages: 509

Publisher: Simon Pulse

Why I Read This: The book had a lot of hype behind it and after hearing about the second book being released, I figured I might as well read the brilliance for myself.

Plot: When Abigail or Abbey's best friend, Kristen Maxwell disappears, her whole world falls apart. Abbey has no one in her whole town anymore and people are saying Kristen killed herself and Abbey knows that is not true. Then at Kristen's funeral and wake, she meets Caspian, who has no connection to Kristen, but says that he has come because of Abbey. Caspian seems to be pulling Abbey back to life, until Abbey discovers Kristen's secret boyfriend and find's out that everything with Caspian is not as it seems, also.

Characters: I really liked Abbey and surprisingly I liked the depressing parts of the book. Abbey, unlike other characters actually mourned over her friend and didn't just forget about Kristen. Also, it was refreshing to see her fight and argue with Caspian instead of putting him on a pedestal. She and the book, in and of themselves are unique and new. The back story was intricately told and the end left me hanging onto a very skinny branch and anxiously awaiting The Haunted.

Readability: I have experienced the awfulness that is losing a loved one. It is a horrible feeling and it makes you feel completely and utterly lost. Until the moment when you realize that they are in a better place. In this book, Abbey finds out hurtful secrets about Kristen, but decides that either way she loves her and that is the basis of the world's strongest friendship, one that lasts longer than a lifetime.

Waiting On Wednesday: Crash Test Love

This week's WoW is
Crash Test Love
by Ted Michael. It was published on June 8th, 2010.
Summary from Goodreads:
The last thing Henry Arlington wants is a girlfriend. He's just very, very good with girls—reading their body language, knowing what they want to hear, and more importantly: getting them into the backseat of his car. But all that changes when he meets Garrett Lennox at one of the many Sweet Sixteen parties he crashes.

Garrett thinks she's done with guys. She was dumped by her ex when she moved from Chicago to Long Island, and now she realizes that she needs to find out who she is by herself, instead of with a boyfriend. What she really needs is some good friends.

Fortunately for Garrett, the J Squad—the "it" girls of East Shore High School—want her in their clique. All she has to do is pass one little test: get East Shore god Henry Arlington to take her to one of the biggest Sweet Sixteens of the year, then dump him in front of everyone.

Garrett has promised herself not to fall for another guy, so playing with Henry's heart shouldn't be hard. Right?

And Henry doesn't fall for girls, so when he and Garrett start to click, it doesn't matter. Does it?
As William Shakespeare once said, "Love is blind," or in this case, the lovers may be, as Henry and Garrett fall in love—and into the trap that awaits them. Because neither of them can even begin to see what the girls of Henry Arlington's past have in store.

This hilarious, sharp, and surprisingly thoughtful novel is the teen Wedding Crashers, filled with love, hope, laughs, and surprising insights about the terrifying process of falling in love.
