Follow Friday!

It's Follow Friday!

This is my Follow Friday post, a weekly meme hosted by Parajunkee!

This week's question: ACK! Your favorite book/movie character (example Hermione Granger played by the Emma chick) just walked into the room! Who is it and what would be your first reaction? You get extra points if you include visual stimulation.

My Answer: My answer is probably incredibly redundant, but mine would have to be Edward Cullen played by Robert Pattinson. I liked him better in Remember Me, but that's not based on a book and beside the point. Anyway, my first reaction would probably be to freak out and laugh ridiculously like I do when I'm nervous. I'd be too shy to actually go over to him so I probably look at him out of the corner of my eye the whole time he was there!

Wondrous Words Wednesday (1)

Wondrous Words Wednesday is hosted by Bermudaonion’s Weblog. Kathy says: “Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme where we share new (to us) words that we’ve encountered in our reading.”

My words this week are from Sisters Red by Jackson Pearce.

1. Fenris
Example: "The Fenris crashes into me with all the force of a bus." (Page 15)
Definition: The Fenris Wolf is a creature of the Asgardian dimension who is said to be an offspring of Loki and the giant Angrboda. It is a huge wolf (usual height 15 feet tall) with human-like intelligence, vast strength and the capacity to change its shape to that of a god or to change its size to that of a real wolf.

Have you learned any new words this week?

Catching Fire & Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins

Summaries from Goodreads

Catching Fire

Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark won the annual competition described in Hunger Games, but the aftermath leaves these victors with no sense of triumph. Instead, they have become the poster boys for a rebellion that they never planned to lead. That new, unwanted status puts them in the bull's-eye for merciless revenge by The Capitol.

Mockingjay

Young Katniss Everdeen has survived the dreaded Hunger Games not once, but twice, but even now she can find no relief. In fact, the dangers seem to be escalating: President Snow has declared an all-out war on Katniss, her family, her friends, and all the oppressed people of District 12. The thrill-packed final installment of Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games trilogy will keep young hearts pounding.

I waited until I had both books to finish reading the trilogy and I was glad that I did. These books were fast-paced and had tons of unexpected twists and turns.

As always, I loved Katniss and Peeta. Katniss is one of my favorite female characters and she always amazes me with her strength and ingenuity. She goes through so many things in these books and still she continues on. The Hunger Games was a fascinating concept. It was cruel and heartless and the descriptions were both fascinating and heartbreaking. The Hunger Games trilogy was one of those series that had a bittersweet ending because after all that killing there's no way that a person could ever be completely okay. I liked that Katniss and Peeta didn't do that and their was epilogue was totally sweet with their little babies. I am glad that I had the chance to finish this series and experience it's greatness. In fact, it was so great that I couldn't start on another book right away because I had so much to think about. I love books like that.

Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices, #1) by Cassandra Clare

Summary from Goodreads

Magic is dangerous--but love is more dangerous still.

When sixteen-year-old Tessa Gray crosses the ocean to find her brother, her destination is England, the time is the reign of Queen Victoria, and something terrifying is waiting for her in London's Downworld, where vampires, warlocks and other supernatural folk stalk the gaslit streets. Only the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons, keep order amidst the chaos.

Kidnapped by the mysterious Dark Sisters, members of a secret organization called The Pandemonium Club, Tessa soon learns that she herself is a Downworlder with a rare ability: the power to transform, at will, into another person. What's more, the Magister, the shadowy figure who runs the Club, will stop at nothing to claim Tessa's power for his own.

Friendless and hunted, Tessa takes refuge with the Shadowhunters of the London Institute, who swear to find her brother if she will use her power to help them. She soon finds herself fascinated by--and torn between--two best friends: James, whose fragile beauty hides a deadly secret, and blue-eyed Will, whose caustic wit and volatile moods keep everyone in his life at arm's length...everyone, that is, but Tessa. As their search draws them deep into the heart of an arcane plot that threatens to destroy the Shadowhunters, Tessa realizes that she may need to choose between saving her brother and helping her new friends save the world...and that love may be the most dangerous magic of all.

Oh, I had missed the Nephilhem so! I don't know why I put off reading for so long. I had missed the Shadowhunters and thought that only Clary and Jace could satisfy my hunger, but I was wrong. The sweet Jem, strong Tessa, and the mysterious aloof Will. It is really hard to not give spoilers, but I'll try. Tessa just reminds me of Clary so much, but they are different in their strengths. Jem is sweet and sick and I really don't know much about him. Right now he is more brotherly material, but he has potential. And William Herondale. *sighing head shake* Black hair, blue eyes, sexily arrogant and utterly frustrating, but what more could you expect from an ancestor of Jace's. Pair them all with Tessa's awesome power and evil automatons and you have an unforgettable start of a glorious series. I love the quotes and parts of poems at the beginning of the chapters. I think that books in the past require a lot more research and the time is what made Clockwork Angel so good. Consider yourself warned, if you thought The Mortal Instruments were wonderful, Cassandra Clare will stun you with this one.

Nevermore by Kelly Creagh

Summary from Goodreads

And the raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting

On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door;

And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming,

And the lamp-light o'er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;

And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor

Shall be lifted - nevermore!

-- from "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe

At once an homage to one of America's greatest writers and a page-turning psychological mystery that is equal parts horror, humor, and romance, NEVERMORE is the story of Varen -- a Poe-fan and Goth -- and Isobel -- a cheerleader and unlikely heroine. When a Lit. project pairs the two together, Isobel finds herself steadily swept into Varen's world, one that he has created in his notebook and in his mind, one where the terrifying stories of Edgar Allan Poe come to life. Isobel slowly learns that dreams can be much more powerful than she'd ever expected, and that pain and despair come in all sorts of shades. As labels of "Goth" and "cheerleader" fade away, she sees more in Varen than a tall, pale outcast, and a consuming romance is braced against the ever-clearer horror that the most terrifying realities are those within our own minds.

When Isobel has a single chance to rescue Varen from the shadows of his own nightmares, will she be able to save him -- and herself?

Patterned Text Generator at TextSpace.net Mysterious, scary and heartbreaking, Nevermore has exceed all expectations. Ridiculously researched, this book brings incredible life to Poe's melancholy poems and questionable death. Isobel, a blonde cheerleader defies all stereotypical status quos. She is not at all stuck-up and has her own thoughts. She is not thrilled to be working with Varen at first, but he quickly grows on her. The minute he wrote his phone number on her hand was the moment that connected them forever. Varen hides behind a hard mask and I enjoy seeing him open up to Isobel and them defy the odds.
The most unexpected and memorable parts of the book were the most gruesome. Bird eating Nocs and phantom men are the least of Varen and Isobel's problems. I was expecting paranormal, but Kelly Creagh's writing is extraordinary. The effort and time put into the book really shows through in the narration. My tip, though? Read all the poems, even when you're tempted to skip through them, because you'll miss some really important parts.

Waiting On Wednesday (6/22/11)

This week’s #1 WOW is Putting Makeup On Dead People By Jen Violi.
Summary: In the spring of her senior year, Donna Parisi finds new life in an unexpected place: a coffin.
Since her father’s death four years ago, Donna has gone through the motions of living: her friendships are empty, she’s clueless about what to do after high school graduation, and her grief keeps her isolated, cut off even from the one parent she has left. That is until she’s standing in front of the dead body of a classmate at Brighton Brothers’ Funeral Home. At that moment, Donna realizes what might just give her life purpose is comforting others in death. That maybe who she really wants to be is a mortician. This discovery sets in motion a life Donna never imagined was possible. She befriends a charismatic new student, Liz, notices a boy, Charlie, and realizes that maybe he's been noticing her, too, and finds herself trying things she hadn’t dreamed of trying before. By taking risks, Donna comes into her own, diving into her mortuary studies with a passion and skill she didn’t know she had in her. And she finally understands that moving forward doesn’t mean forgetting someone you love. Jen Violi’s heartfelt and funny debut novel is a story of transformation—how one girl learns to grieve and say goodbye, turn loss into a gift, and let herself be exceptional...at loving, applying lipstick to corpses, and finding life in the wake of death. (Goodreads)
My Thoughts: The strange, slightly disturbing title was attractive and the story line is definitely unique and sounds inspiring.

This week’s #2 WOW is Angel Kiss by Laura Jane Cassidy.
Summary: Jacki King is fifteen and adjusting to her new life in a small village. She's missing Dublin but she's making new friends: artistic Colin, feisty Emily - and Nick, gorgeous yet unavailable. But no sooner is Jacki settled than the torturous headaches and nightmares begin - followed by strange visions, voices and signs...Jacki refuses to believe that something paranormal is happening. But then she discovers the unsolved murder that occurred in the village years before ... (Goodreads)
My Thoughts: The cover was what drew me to this one. It seems ghostly to me for some reason. Then I read the summary to find out that there are TWO potential love interests AND a murder! God knows, my to-read list didn't need it, but it just had to go on.
This week’s #3 WOW is

A Job From Hell (Ancient Legends #1) by Jayde Scott

Summary: In a world of love bonds, rituals, dark magic, ancient enemies and immortals, nothing is as it seems and no one can be trusted.
Seventeen-year-old Amber enters the paranormal world by chance when her brother, Dallas, sets her up with a summer job in Scotland. Dallas has spied something in the woods he thinks could make them rich beyond their wildest dreams. But instead of finding riches, Amber unknowingly enters a paranormal race—and promptly wins the first prize—a prize for which many would kill. Soon, she discovers her new boss, Aidan, didn’t employ her for her astounding housekeeping skills and he isn't who he claims to be either.
As the dark forces slowly conspire against Amber, her naivety and love for Aidan catapults her into a calamitous series of otherworldly events. With every immortal creature hunting for her, whom can she trust with her life? (Goodreads) My Thoughts: I'm not a big fan of this cover, but it's been a long time since I read a vampire book and the race concept is new.

Happy Wednesday!

This is my Follow Friday post, a weekly meme hosted by Parajunkee!

This week's question: In light of the Summer Solstice. Also known as Midsummer...let's talk about fairies. What is your favorite fairy tale or story that revolves around the fae?

My Answer: In a cozy corner of my heart lies my favorite and the best fae fairy tale stories ever....The Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa. It was the second time I had read a fairy story after the first story discouraged me. Then these came along and locked into place a new obsession. I even watched 2 Tinkerbell movies after reading the first book!
